Speaker of Parliament asked government to look into Maputu issue 

The Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho has called government to look into the Committee of Enquiry’s report on Ghana’s participation in the All Africa Games in Maputu. 

Mr Adjaho said the report smacked of corruption and government ought to take appropriate action against those implicated in the report.

The advise was made through the Minister of Information and Media relations, Mahama Ayariga on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, following the approval of 53-point-Eight Million for the Ministry of Youth and Sports to run its activities for this year. 

The amount approved is a little over a million of what was given the Ministry last year. 

The Ranking Member on the Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture, Isaac Asiamah raised reservations over the approval of this year’s  budget allocation,to the Sports Ministry due to the over expenditure last year. 

He also called for heads to roll at the Ministry and some of its agencies as according to him the level of malfeasance at the place was too much. 

The Chairman of the Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture, Kobina Mensah Woyome said the Ministry is a strategic channel for socio-economic development.
 
According to him, the sustainable development of the Ministry is vital for the future of the country. 

He explained that last year the Ministry spent in excess of 199 million Ghana Cedis but was quick to add that the amount was released through the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency, GYEEDA. 

Mr.Woyome said the money was used to pay the arrears of beneficiaries of the programme. 

Meanwhile, MP for Chiana Paga, Abuga Pele debunked assertions that the country doesn’t have a Youth Development Strategy. 

Upon doubts from the Minority over its existence. Mr. Pele promised to furnish the house with it. 

It would be recalled that the Ministry of Youth and Sports set up a committee chaired by Nii Adotey Din Barima to investigate circumstances leading to the embarrassment of the national athletics team during the All Africa games in Maputo Mozambique in 2011.

The report indicted some officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports who were accused of corruption in the awards of contracts and lack of supervision of contracts but no action was taken on any of the persons indicted in that report.
