26th March, 2012 The Daily Graphic discusses the effect of illegal mining on the environment. It says illegal mining otherwise known as 'galamsey' has a telling toll on livelihoods across the country. It says the impunity with which illegal miners operate must be a wake-up call to government and the security agencies to act quickly to disarm their deviant behaviour. The Graphic calls on government and mining companies to put in place alternative livelihood programme that will compel the youth to abandon illegal criminal activities. The Ghanaian Times commends the Norwegian Police for the arrest of the culprits who allegedly stole gold ornaments belonging to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu. The paper hopes that with the thieves firmly in the grips of the law, all unjustified criticism against the Asantehene will cease and unqualified apology rendered to him. GBC
