Koforidua Junior High Schools closed down due to the absence of teachers A visit to some schools comprising the basic and Senior High levels visited in Koforidua in the New Juaben Municipality indicates that teachers in the Eastern Region comprising GNAT and NAGRAT have joined the nationwide teachers’ industrial action. While the Primary and Junior High Schools were closed down with some pupils loitering due to the absence of their teachers, tutors in the second cycle institutions were on campus but not teaching. In some schools National Service Personnel and Senior Prefects were invigilating the lower class students in their end of second term examination whilst the permanent tutors were on sit down strike backing their colleagues for their better conditions of service. Among the schools visited are Effiduase Methodist and Catholic Basic Schools, Nana Kwaku Boateng Basic School as well as the Ghana National, Oti Boateng and Koforidua Senior High and Technical Schools. The teachers appealed to government to improve their living conditions to enable them give off their best especially now that they are to handle both the third and fourth year students of the SHS in the country for the West African Senior High School Certificate Examination. They said it is a herculean task given them and needs to be commensurate with the realistic remuneration. They said they will rescind their decision as and when their demands are met. GBC
