Turkey reports shortage in camp space for Syrian refugees.



UN refugee agency (UNHCR) says shortage of space in camps is the main challenge for local authorities in Turkey, where thousands of Syrians have found refuge.
 

UNHCR reports that a new camp known as Nizip-2, which will house about 5,000 people, is set to open by the end of next week.


The agency cites government data which show the number of Syrians registered and accommodated in 14 camps in Turkey stands at 153,307 as of 12 January.This includes 144 people who are in hospitals.


It says the figure represents a three per cent increase over totals at the end of December 2012.

Information provided to UNHCR by camp officials show more than 24,000 children are attending schools and kindergartens, while upwards of 5,000 adults are benefiting from vocational and other courses at 13 camps.


The majority of the teachers at the camps are Syrians although Turkish teachers also have been assigned by local governorates.
